In preparation for Josh's heart catheterization he had to undergo a bunch of preop testing the day before to evaluate his heart and lungs.
First stop was nuclear medicine for a lung perfusion and ventilation scan. Since the test only lasts about ten minutes and they don't have to do any breath holding techniques, they don't like to put kids to sleep for it like they did with his CT scan last month. We weren't sure at all how things would go since the machine is kind of intimidating and it would require an IV with an injection for the test itself.
When we first got there, Josh didn't seem too worried about the machine since it was fun to climb on.
When the room started filling up with people though he definitely paused for a few minutes. Thankfully the children's hospital has great Child Life Specialists to get kids through scary tests and sickness and when we said he likes bubbles, they immediately produced some.
He was so proud of himself for blowing the bubbles all by himself for the first time.
Once they needed him to lie down, Miss Amanda's iPad came in very handy. He hardly cried at all when they stuck him twice to get his IV in. Evidently balloon busting and monster making is a lot more fun.
Then when they started the machine, an episode of Mickey Mouse club was all it took to keep his attention. Guess it's good to know he's not claustrophobic.
From there it was off for another chest xray and then it was up to cardiology for a preop physical. Funny how Josh seems to know the way....
Once again childlife came through with a box of dinosaurs that he was all over. We have no idea if he's ever even seen a dinosaur before but he had them roaring at each other and eating pieces of his fingers in no time. Maybe it's an inherent little boy trait. With a few games of peek-a-boo, we made it through the rest of the appointment with flying colors.
Since we knew we couldn't feed him after midnight, we wanted to plan for a late nap so we could stuff him full of food before a late bedtime. Since he was already droopy since he'd been up for six hours, we thought we'd try our passes to the Cincinnati children's museum since we were already in the neighborhood. When we opened up the back door of the car this is what we found.
Luckily he was able to rally and ended up having a blast playing with the sand box and balls, and watching the trains
And given his new found love of dinosaurs we made a special trip to the natural history section to check them out.
After a stop at the gift shop to pick up "Cathie" his new dino buddy to keep him company for his cath procedure the next day, we'd managed to kill three more hours. He was asleep before we even left the parking lot so with that two hour nap, we were able to keep him up until almost 11 that night with many extra snacks thrown in. While we still weren't sure how a six hour fast was going to go the next morning, we all turned in to try for a good night's sleep.
